Auschwitz Survivor to Examine Social Psychology of Concentration Camp

photo of a guard tower at a concentration campOn Monday, Oct. 5, the Solomon Asch Center for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict will present “Humans Under Extreme Conditions in the Nazi-German Extermination Camp Birkenau,” a talk by Tomas Radil.

Radil, a senior scientist at the Institute of Physiology, Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, is a survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. In his lecture, he will examine social psychological mechanisms of the camp, with special attention to the power hierarchy of SS and privileged prisoners, and to inmates’ individual and collectivistic efforts toward survival.
