Events for Bryn Mawr’s 2011 commencement weekend will be taking place on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, instead of the Saturday/Sunday schedule of years past, announced President Jane McAuliffe in recent e-mails to the undergraduate class of 2011 and graduate students poised to earn their degrees.

The new schedule also has the graduation speaker address students as part of the commencement ceremony instead of during convocation. Garden party, to be enhanced with new food and tables for guests, will follow commencement on Saturday afternoon

The convocation ceremony will now be held on Friday afternoon. Senior class presidents and representatives from the two graduate schools will be featured speakers at this event, along with a faculty or staff speaker elected by students.

There are also plans for a cultural performance on Friday night and possibly even a fireworks display (pending township approval).

This schedule reflects changes recommended by a committee of students, faculty and staff that has met for 18 months to look at ways to improve commencement weekend. The recommendations are based on conversations the committee had with students, faculty, and parents about the weekend.

The new schedule is designed to make it easier for family and friends traveling from out of town to join their loved ones for this special event while maintaining the traditional elements of past commencement weekends.

A detailed schedule of the weekend’s events will be posted online at a future date.
