The Department of Athletics has announced that this year’s annual April Fitness Month will be dedicated to longtime staff member Ray Tharan, who died in 2009 after 26 years of service to the College. On Friday, April 1, the dedication will be formalized when a plaque honoring Tharan will be unveiled in the Fitness Center.
April Fitness Month will also include “Fridays With Frank,” when community members are invited to work out in the fitness center “to the smooth and sultry sound of Ray’s favorite singer, Frank Sinatra,” weekly from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
“Ray was a hard working, caring and sensitive man who gave faithful service to the College and touched the lives of countless students, faculty and staff,” the department said in an email to the community. “Hundreds of students benefited from his coaching, teaching and mentoring, and all of us appreciated his positive attitude and good humor. He encouraged the entire community to be involved in fitness through various challenges during the month of April, ‘April Fitness Month.’ His enthusiasm and energy inspired the Bryn Mawr College Fit Club to dedicate a month of fitness activities in his honor.”
Other highlights of the month include a lecture on developing mental strategies for optimal performance by sports psychologist Jen Gapin ’03 as well as an undergraduate weightlifting contest.
