Former professor and field hockey coach Jenepher Shillingford and Letty Thall, M.S.S. ’74, were honored with Philadelphia Leadership Awards by Women’s eNews. The awards are given to those who have dedicated their lives to improving the lives of women. They received recognition at a Gala held on Oct. 23 at Bryn Mawr’s Thomas Great Hall.

For more than 50 years, Shillingford’s personal passion for athletics has guided her lifelong commitment to expanding opportunities for women in sports. She served 20 years as a professor and field hockey coach at Bryn Mawr, who named their field hockey and prestigious annual award after her.

Shillingford was a member of the 1955-56 U.S. field hockey team and served as the Snell Professor of Health and Physical Education at Ursinus College. She has been recognized for her work by the National Association of Collegiate Women Administrators and the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, and is a member of the Southeast Pa. Sports Hall of Fame. Today Shillingford continues to educate and mentor through her blog, Women in Coaching.

Thall has held many positions during her career as an advocate for women and children in Pa. She was a member of the Philadelphia police force, vice president of the Pa. Women’s Campaign Fund board, and chair of the mayor’s Commission for Women.

After enrolling in Bryn Mawr’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, Thall helped Women Organized Against Rape write its first grant proposal to secure funding and cofounded Women’s Way, the leading funding, advocacy, and education organization for women in the Greater Philadelphia region. For the past eight years, she has been working for Maternity Care Coalition, overseeing the development of community education campaigns, public policy recommendations in maternal health, and the monitoring of prenatal care services for low-income families.
