The following email was sent to staff by Director of Diversity, Social Justice, and Inclusion Stephanie Nixon on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Please consider joining the Diversity Council for 2014-2015.

The College’s Diversity Council

The Diversity Council supports the mission of the Diversity Leadership Group (DLG) and that of the College as both a ‘think tank’ and as ‘outreach facilitators’ who attend to the curriculum; campus climate; and College programs that foster inclusiveness and diversity. The Council is convened and chaired by the Pensby Center’s Director of Diversity, Social Justice and Inclusion, who also serves as liaison to the Diversity Leadership Group. The Council is comprised of faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate student members.

The purpose of the Diversity Council is to deepen the College’s commitment to diversity through the following activities:

  • Demonstrate the centrality of the College’s commitment to diversity and social justice;
  • Create and support educational programs and dialogue related to diversity and social justice;
  • Provide support, resources and advice for diversity and social justice efforts across campus;
  • Promote curricula and co-curricula that appropriately reflect diversity and social justice;
  • Promote a diverse faculty and staff by assisting in developing and implementing effective recruitment and retention practices;
  • Monitor and report annually on the diversity of the faculty, students, and staff and, through the chair, provide an annual “report card” to the DLG on the state of diversity on campus.
  • Fund and award mini-grants that enhance diversity and social justice on campus through the Vickers Fund for Diversity and Social Change

Membership

The Council is chaired by the Director of Diversity, Social Justice & Inclusion and is administered through the Pensby Center. Faculty and staff representatives would ideally serve for two-year terms, with staggered terms to ensure continuity of experience. Students shall be appointed to one-year terms, renewable on the recommendation of the chair and members of the Diversity Council, the SGA or appropriate graduate student association..

The first meeting of the Diversity Council will be scheduled during the week of Sept. 29 – Oct. 3. Meeting time will be determined based on members’ availability.

If you are interested in serving or have questions about the goals or operation of the Council, please contact Stephanie Nixon (snixon01@brynmawr.edu).
