Announcing theater auditions for the Bi-College Theater Program’s production of Erick Ehn’s Saint Plays
Erik Ehn, an original theatrical voice, believes in theater that is “civic, chaotic, strange, queer.” Plays must simultaneously form community and then interrogate that community. Over the course of his career Ehn has written over 150 Saint Plays based on the lives of saints: some are five minutes long, some longer. He takes the lives of saints and explodes them, putting them into a contemporary or popular context with a dash of mysticism mixed in. These plays are about devotion, and really the imagination. They ask us to investigate our notion of self, and what we will sacrifice for our beliefs. The lives of saints are not pretty and their ends often grizzly.
This fall we will be working on three or four of the plays, investigating the lives of Joan of Arc, George the Dragon Slayer, and Mary. They are magical, impossible, and beautiful.
Experience isn’t necessary…Curiosity is essential.
