Yuhou (Susan) Xia ’13 was named runner-up in the national Alice Shafer Award, given to the top female undergraduate in mathematics in the country.

Xia has taken mathematics courses throughout the Tri-Co and completed graduate-level coursework at University of Pennsylvania, where she is currently pursuing an independent study for her honor’s thesis. According to the Association for Women in Mathematics press release, “Her work in the graduate courses has been ‘as good as those of the best Ph.D. students in the class,’ and she is praised for her enthusiasm and excitement for new mathematical ideas.”

In 2012, Xia was awarded The Charles S. Hinchman Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was founded in memory of the late Charles S. Hinchman of Philadelphia by a gift made by his family. It is awarded annually to a member of the junior class for work of special excellence in her major subject(s) and is held during the senior year.
